Portion:  The amount of food or drink you consume, big or small

Serving:  A measured amount of food or drink you, 1 slice of bread or 1 8 oz cup of milk.

Grains:
1 cup of cereal = 1 fist
1 pancake = 1 CD/DVD
½ cup of cooked rice, pasta or potato= ½ a baseball
1 slice of bread- 1 cassette tape
1 piece of cornbread= 1 bar of soap

Vegetables and Fruit:
1 cup of salad greens= 1 baseball
1 baked potato= 1 fist
1 medium fruit= baseball
½ cup of fresh fruit= ½ baseball
¼ cup of raisins= 1 large egg

Dairy and Cheese:
1 ½ oz. cheese= 4 stacked dice or 2 cheese slices
½ cup of ice cream= ½ baseball

Meat and Alternatives:
3 oz. meat, fish, and poultry-= 1 deck of cards
3 oz. grilled/baked fish= 1 checkbook
2 tbsp. peanut butter= 1 ping pong ball

Fats:
1 tsp. margarine or spreads= 1 dice

A food allergy happens when your body thinks a food you have eaten is dangerous for you and tries to fight it off.  This can happen right away or several hours after the food is eaten.

The most common food allergies for children are:

Peanuts and other nuts
Seafood
Milk (from a cow)
Eggs
Soy
Wheat

Signs of an allergic reaction:

Runny nose
Itchy skin (hives)
Tingly tongue or lips
Tightness in the throat
Hoarse voice
Wheezing
Cough
Nausea
Vomiting
Stomach pains
Diarrhea

The way kids might describe a reaction:

This food is too spicy
My tongue is hot (or burning)
My mouth is tingling
My lips feel tight
My tongue feels like there is hair on it
