Types of Dinosaurs

trexTyrannosaurus Rex (theropod)

  • Walked on two legs
  • Kept itself balanced with its huge head and long & heavy tail
  • Could weigh up to 7 tons!
  • Had small arms that were extremely powerful and featured two clawed fingers
  • Lived in the late Cretaceous Period, around 66 million years ago


velociVelociraptor (theropod)

  • Lived in the late Cretaceous Period
  • Could weight up to 33 pounds
  • Was around the size of a Turkey
  • First known fossil was found in the Mongolian Gobi Desert in 1922

 

brontoApatosaurus, also known as a Brontosaurus (sauropod)

  • Lived in the Jurassic Period, around 150 million years ago
  • One of the largest animals to have ever walked on Earth. Could weigh over 23 metric tons and be 75 feet long!
  • Had long whip-like tails that counter balanced their long necks
  • Was a herbivore (plant eating)

brachioBrachiosaurus (sauropod)

  • Walked on all four legs
  • Lived in North America. First fossils were found in the Colorado River of  the United States in 1900.
  • Herbivores: Ate between 440 and 880 pounds of plants every day!

tricerTriceratops (cerapod)

  • Had three horns to protect itself from the Tyrannosaurus Rex which lived during the same time period
  • Herbivore
  • Lived in the Cretaceous Period (around 65 million years ago)
  • Had anywhere between 400 and 800 teeth!

Herbivores

  • Plant eating animals
    • Leaves
    • Twigs
    • Seeds
  • Had flat teeth designed for snipping or stripping vegetation

Carnivores

  • Eating meat of other animals
    • Fellow dinosaurs
    • Lizards
    • Insects
    • Early mammals
  • Had long, sharp, and serrated teeth designed for tearing tough meat

Omnivores

  • Eat both plants and meat of other animals
    • Leaves, twigs, seeds
    • Fellow dinosaurs, lizards, insects, early mammals
  • Had flat and saw like teeth
